She is one of the most respected women in the world. She has the most successful talk show of all time, and two of the most widely read 'start up' magazines of all time. She is a self-made billionaire. Millions of overweight, slovenly, depressed housewives cling to her every word on a daily basis. She has been named the most philanthropic African American of all time. And she has just opened herself up to be destroyed.
As we approach the 2008 presidential elections, a media storm has surrounded Oprah Winfrey's support and now active campaigning for democratic hopeful Barack Hussein Obama. As if the accolades that have been heaped on Ms. Winfrey aren't enough, hundreds of manicured and made-over reporters and news anchors are scrabbling over each other like lemmings to a cliff to be the next to hail Oprah's influence and claim she could single handedly bring Obama the presidency. Sorry, but I believe Oprah's bonbon gulping base just isn't gonna do the trick.
For starters, Obama's first major hurtle is the Democrat Party itself. Over the last 40 years, they have done a fantastic job of convincing the American people they are the party of the 'little guy' and 'black rights'. History, however, does not bare this out. The GOP was the party of Lincoln, who freed the slaves and led the call for the Civil War. It took Republican votes to overcome Democrat opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the following year's Voting Rights Act as well. It was Democrat governors who placed the Confederate battle flag back over the capitals of so many southern states, and Democrats effectively controlled the south during the entire period of segregation and the Civil Rights Movement. And never forget it was the vaunted Kennedy's - both JFK and RFK - who were attempting to have J. Edgar Hoover discredit Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
One must also take into account the Democrat party's power and financial base. All rich, snooty, pasty faced white Liberals. Sure you have men like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Charles Wrangle that can go out there and perpetuate 40 years of misinformation - knowing full well their accomplices in the media will not call them on it, and the general ignorance of the American people will certainly not detect it - but these men hold no real power, and are merely attempting to hold what little power the establishment has given them. The real power in the party comes from the lilly white halls of Berkeley, the uber rich George Soros, and the 527 group MoveOn.org. The innate racism and elitism that accompanies the high and mighty is bred into these people whether they would admit it or not. Some will vote for Obama so they can appear cultured and open minded, but the vast majority want Billary back in the White House. He's going to have enough trouble garnering the nomination, let alone the actual election.
The next hurdle will be the political opposition that will undoubtedly take aim at Ms. Winfrey. Obama himself is already facing major scrutiny for being inexperienced, the fact his middle name is Hussein, and his background as a Muslim. Those factors don't bode well for him in an age of terrorism. But Ms. Winfrey had better steel herself for the onslaught that will undoubtedly head her way. Perhaps she should learn from what happened to Michael J. Fox in the 2006 mid-terms. He put himself and his illness out there as a political tool, and was called on the carpet. In another display of overwhelming ignorance, the media attacked Rush Limbaugh for his portrayal of Fox on his talk show's web cam. I'm sure they also sought to blunt the truth of what Mr. Limbaugh had to say, but either way all they accomplished was proving how agenda driven they have become. Rush was dead on in his assessment of Mr. Fox, as Michael admitted in his own book to doing exactly what he was being accused of - manipulating his medication to make his condition look worse in order to gain sympathy - and did so before a Congressional committee. So Ms. Winfrey will have some defenders in the media, but in the age of internet information sharing, talk radio, and blogs those defenders won't gain much traction.
I believe the largest hurdle however will be the black voters they are undoubtedly counting on. I must take a second here to say something about my usage of the term 'blacks'. I am not a 'white American'...I am simply an American. Why do we continually separate ourselves with these ridiculous terms? Call me a racist..I don't give a fuck. Fuck you and your stupid politically correct term. I have yet to hear any of the black guys I work with refer to themselves as 'African American'. Mostly they just call each other and themselves 'nigga'. But I digress.
I feel this is a serious miscalculation on the part of Oprah. Most of her fans are white - just watch her show. She does plenty for black heroes and leaders, and is one of the few of her race to not just use the term 'African' for her benefit, but is instead attempting to give something back to the country her ancestry originated from. But she had better count on a cross-cultural campaign, because the Democrat party's attempt to stifle the power of Black America through 40 years of abusing and manipulating the Welfare system is gonna bite her in the ass. The Dems spent a long time creating and feeding the 'what can you do for me next' mentality which is expressed so well by so many Katrina victims, and may even rear it's ugly head on election day.
So Oprah, get out there on the campaign trail. Galvanize the welfare and self-loathing crowds to vote for a man who needs a focus group to gather an opinion on whether or not to bang his own wife. Not since suggesting A Million Little Pieces to your book club without even reading it have you faced the sort of scrutiny, backlash, and failure that will accompany this decision. You tend to jump on every fad that comes around and give it your full support, and that's genuinely what Obama is - another fad. And there's no doubt you will garner tons of black support for your candidate, but unfortunately for you the Katrina Mentality will stop you in your tracks.
50 million supporters who won't go vote because they're expecting someone else to do the damn job.
